PORTADRILLMINI®  U.S.PATENT # 6315059
In many areas of the country and throughout the world , it remains extremely difficult if not ( i.e. location impossible) to transport to a location , drilling equipment necessary to drill water wells. Inadequate or nonexistent roads prevent conventional , heavy truck mounted water well drilling equipment, from reaching the desired location . Because the substantial roads required to sustain such conventional drill rigs and truck mounted equipment are not available in many areas in underdeveloped and third world countries , large areas throughout the world are effectively isolated and non-feasible from equipment necessary to drill water wells . A small , light weight , easily portable yet effective drilling system is needed that would allow water wells to be drilled in currently isolated areas . A Man Portable drill rig unit that is relatively simple to operate that would not require highly skilled operators allowing a simple method for non-skilled ,uneducated laborers to operate. If required the PORTADRILLMINI ® can be helicopter placed in inaccessible areas along with the encompassing well drilling tools. The PORTADRILLMINI ®. addresses this critical need as a portable well drilling unit . email -- ebradytax@bellsouth.net

PHONE 305-345-7068

The PORTADRILLMINI ®. includes a portable, drilling, rig, unit, which can be manually mobilized to be transported to drill water wells and bore holes in even the most remote areas on earth and if necessary further easily disassembled . The described drilling system includes a detachable mast , engine, engine cradle ,winch assembly ,transmission , air/water/mud injection flow control valve unit, main base stabilizers , mobile dolly wheel unit which is easily disassembled to aid in transport and allow for crating to ship overseas . The winch assembly is attached to the rear mast pole and the top of the engine cradle through a cable to raise the engine assembly up the mast guided by a left and right mast pole engine cradle sliders. The winch assembly includes a modified hand winch which accommodates the mechanical cable pull down system to provide pull-down pressure capabilities . By rotating the winch clockwise, provides hoisting action, by reverse direction the winch provides pull-down pressure via. cables routed from the winch to the bottom of the base routed through pulleys and connected to springs mounted on each side of the engine cradle. Rotating direction of winch pulls cables to stretch tension on springs forcing down pressure. To aid in downward pressure , a weight bar is mounted atop the engine cradle . At left and right distal ends weights can be added to the weight bar for additional pull-down enhancement and adjusted accordingly to rock formation requirements , and drilling time.

Winch design allows constant pressure to be applied to the springs . The hand winch has two gear ratios for varying pull-down or hoisting loads or applications. This winch shares a common spool but has separate cables for pull-down and hoisting duties. The engine cradle allows the power unit and transmission to be removed from over the water well or bore hole to allow ease in installing well casings and or well pipe. This feature also allows aid in transporting or shipping the drill unit. The air/water/mud flow control valve is located below the transmission on the steel swivel unit . This allows quick diversion and adjusted control of drilling fluid or air and or combination from the water well, bore hole , to a mud pit or visa versa. Important location of this flow control valve also allows hoses to travel freely and out of the way of the drilling operations and moving parts .

The main base is equipped with water deflector shields to protect the operator and equipment from debris and water forced up out of the well or bore hole under high air pressure . The two water deflector shields consist of a primary stationary deflector shield mounted under the main base and a secondary removable deflector mounted on the bottom of the drill steel guide table .

Under the main base is positioned the main base stabilizer rails . This is the counter weight for the pull down system and helps prevent the unit from lifting itself off the ground . Stabilizer rails double as a stable base to spread support for the weight above on the pull down assist weight bar. This counter weight, bottom heavy , eliminates the need for guy wires or tie down ropes . Allowing access to confined areas that would not allow tie down ropes or guy wire area. The drilling unit must be leveled before drilling begins and must remain level through the drilling operation. The stabilizer rails allows for somewhat of a platform to raise the portable drill unit off the ground for observation of the drilling fluids or drill cuttings escape area . Allows operators a platform to work upon out of mud or water.

A steel quill provides means of connecting the power unit torque through the transmission to the drill pipe and allows air injection or drilling fluid injection from a compressor unit or a pump to enter the hollow drill pipe through a multiple side port. The quill is directly coupled to the transmission connected to a power output shaft from the engine.

A steel swivel housing is rigidly mounted to the rotary power unit but has a sheer pin to break away to prevent engine or transmission damage. The swivel housing is completely removable from the quill. Compression seals are greased through grease fittings at the top and bottom seal. The PORTADRILLMINI ®. satisfies an important need not met by currently available drilling equipment . A primary advantage of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. is that it provides a simple rotary air/water drilling unit with pull-down pressure capabilities. A drilling rig that is truly manually portable for mobilization into areas where other power drilling rigs could not be brought or taken except through helicopter transport.. Short height of this unit proves to be accessible in areas where conventional drilling units were to tall. Confined or enclosed locations necessary for well placements are now accessible. This may possibly be the smallest rotary air/ water / mud injection drilling unit with pull-down pressure capabilities .

The PORTADRILLMINI ®. provides a drilling system with a durable mast and fully stabilized base unit and is simple in design and operation. Commonly available parts and bolt-on components that are easily replaceable in the field to eliminate rig downtime for repair of worn parts . Equipment overhead repair and operation expense is affordably low in comparison to conventional well drilling rigs drilling the same diameter wells as the PORTADRILLMINI ®. .
The unit described is so simple enough to operate and repair that a person with only limited drilling experience can safely and effectively operate the rig after a short brief training period is completed for either residential personal use or for commercial drilling use and affordable for either application .

An additional advantage of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. is that , despite its compact design, adequate pull-down pressure can be applied to the drill steel during the water well or bore hole drilling , although sometimes not necessary because of sufficient down pressure from the weights on the weight bar mounted on the engine cradle.

Yet another advantage over other current available drilling rigs, is the ability to remove the power unit and or transmission from over the well or bore hole without removing the mast or the rest of the rig from its placement for ease in well operations with well casings or for emergency engine repair or replacement. The PORTADRILLMINI ®. also includes a compact drill steel table that allows for the rapid threading and unthreading of drill steel and guides the steel straight during the drilling process . Another advantage provided is the steel swivel arrangement that allows the power unit output shaft to be connected through the transmission to the drill steel through a quill that is used to direct high pressure compressed air and /or the injection of water, drilling fluids or mud to the drill bit. All of these components of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. advantages resulted in a light weight, simplified, man portable drill rig, inexpensive alternative drilling system that can drill wells to depths of up to 200 feet in areas not currently accessible to conventional water well drill equipment. The inventor of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. has experienced an overwhelming great deal of research and development prototype testing success in the United States as the existence of a small portable rotary air/ water drilling rig has become known .

The PORTADRILLMINI ®. produced unexpected results namely better growth of plants and vegetables in household gardening because the water is natural and lacks treatment chemicals. A synergistic effect was produced utilizing the PORTADRILLMINI ®. due to the following facts and results from prototype experimentation , a reduction in drinking water consumption due to a new well being used to water lawn irrigation . Accordingly , it is an object of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. to provide a rotary air/ water drilling rig which is effectively and feasiblely able to drill through various rock formations throughout the world .

More particularly , it is an object of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. to provide a means to which a water well drill is portable and operable by one man and constructed to negotiate narrow passageways , passage through residential walk gates and overhead utilities , and confined spaces found in residential well drilling .  U.S.PATENT # 6315059

Detailed Description of the PORTADRILLMINI - SOLD OUT -- OUT OF STOCK -

® U.S. PATENT # 6315059
The PORTADRILLMINI ®. is a highly man portable drill, manually transportable , rotary air/ water /mud injection drilling unit with a mechanical pull-down pressure system . The drilling unit is designed to be useful in the drilling of water wells and bore holes located in confined areas and capable of drilling well bores up to 200 feet in depth in areas not possible or feasible by previous conventional drilling equipment. The drill rig can be easily further disassembled if the need arises by using small hand tools into pieces which can be carried by one or two men . Also would aid in overseas crating and shipping. The drilling system does not require disassembly for mobilization as it is equipped with a mobile wheel system for manual mobilization. The drilling system can be easily maneuvered into drilling position where water well or bore hole is desired and quickly reassembled if required with the same hand tools. The PORTADRILLMINI ®. can accommodate light weight drill steel for use with air, water or mud drilling or a combination of injection methods .

The Portadrillmini Drill unit is a U.S. Patented drill unit. Other portable drills on the market such as Hydra-tek, Hydra-fab, Rockmaster,Hydra-Drill are not patented drill Units that have not  been granted a U.S. Patent .

The rotary power unit and transmission is attached to a engine cradle which is slidably mounted inside a self contained , detachable mast . The engine cradle is mechanically lowered or hoisted through forces applied directional proportionate , by a special winch and cable arrangement attached to the mast.

The PORTADRILLMINI ®. . water well drilling unit comprises a main base stabilizer rails platform which consist of a front stabilizer rail , a center stabilizer rail , and a rear stabilizer rail. The rails platforms wide stance and substantial weight serves as a broad heavy base so no lines or ropes for guy wires are necessary . Also serves as a counter weight for the mechanical pull-down pressure system . This arrangement of stabilizer rails provides an elevated platform level to allow easy access to the well or bore hole for removal of bore hole rock cuttings and observation of drilling fluids circulation .

On the rear of the stabilizer rail the mobile unit wheel dolly system extends comprising of a left wheel and right wheel , rotatably mounted at opposite distal ends thereof . A main base is securely mounted on top side of Main base stabilizer rails platform . Sandwiched between the two components is a main base water deflector shield . In the center positioned accordingly is a drill steel opening in which the drill steel passes through . The purpose of the main base water deflector shield serves as a primary shield to prevent the operator or the engine from dirt or water, mud or debris exiting the water well or bore hole forced from high pressure. The main base is molded to accept the drill steel table water deflector shield , provided as a secondary water deflector shield . The purpose of the secondary deflector shield is to prevent water or rocks and debris from the operator and from the engine as to protect from injury and or engine premature failure .

Positioned on the left center of the main base is a left mast pole , securely connected extending upwardly vertically therefrom. Opposite on the main base is a right mast pole, securely connected extending upwardly vertically therefrom . Positioned on the rear center a rear mast pole , securely connected extending upwardly vertically therefrom. A tee top is securely connected to top distal ends of left mast pole, right mast pole , and rear mast pole .

Mounted slidably on the left mast pole ,and right mast pole is a engine cradle, which securely connects the engine and a rotary gear reduction transmission drive box . Inclusive is a transmission output drive sheer pin connecting the steel swivel . This rotates allowing power torque rotation to travel via drill steel coupling , threading onto drill steel shaft having a drill bit at an opposite distal end . A slidable engine cradle allows for up and down travel of the engine and gear reduction transmission drive box for vertical drilling.

Mounted on the side of steel swivel is securely mounted injection inlet tube which allows passage for the air or water or mud injection or combination thereof from air/water/mud injection flow control valve system regulator unit . Which is passed down through the center of the hollow drill steel to the distal end exiting the drill bit . This provides the means for adjustable rotary air/water injection drilling methods and or mud injection drilling methods combining all or portions of, adjusting methods for various rock formations . The air/water injection flow control valve system regulator unit is controlled by a water flow control- water side check valve . Connection from water hose or water source . At the distal end of air /water injection flow control valve system regulator unit is a air flow control valve . Connection for high pressure air. On the left side of the engine cradle sliders positioned is a left mount bushing inside the left pull-down cable spring mount. Also on the right side of the engine cradle is a right mount bushing provided for the right pull-down cable spring mount. Following is the right pull-down spring as also opposite side there is of left pull-down spring. Attached to the left pull-down spring is a left cable turn buckle . Mirrored on the right is the right cable turn buckle to adjust tension on the left pull-down cable opposite is the right pull-down cable. Extending downwardly towards the outside of the left mast pole and also the right mast pole to the main base where located is the left base cable pulley and also for the right base cable pulley. Attached at that point at the main base on the rear of the main base there are a left cable slack adjuster spring and opposite a right cable slack adjuster spring . On the left rear of the main base the cable then follows through a left rear cable guide pulley as well as the opposite side of the main base the right rear cable guide pulley. The pull -down cables together are guided upwardly on the back side of the rear mast pole , from then on through a lower cable guide eye bolt passing on upward through the upper cable guide eye bolt where together the cables are spooled onto the cable pull-down system winch , positioned midway on the rear mast pole , where a spool is divided by a spool divider plate , which separates the pull-down cable spool side and the hoist cable spool side which is turned in rotating according position by winch crank handle for hoisting capabilities by means of hoist cable attached over the tee top on top cable pulleys back downward to attach on engine cradle or reverse direction for pull-down capabilities.

As winch handle is cranked in the reverse position winding cables onto pull-down cable spool side pulling tension on the pull-down springs putting downward pressure on the engine cradle providing mechanical pull-down pressure capabilities . Cable pull-down system winch is two speed winch with locking capabilities to maintain pull-down pressure tension on springs in a constant pressure mode .

To further enhance the pull-down capabilities there is a weight bar pull-down assist mounted on the top of the engine cradle with a left side of bar and a right side of bar. Which holds left side weights and also right side weights . These weights are secured in place by a weight lock on each distal end of the weight bar . These weights are providing a downward force on the engine ultimately relaying to the pressure on the drill bit preventing the engine from jumping . In operation the pull-down assist weights is adjustable relative until the engine drills smoothly and effectively as different types of rock formation are drilled through to achieve smooth operation .

Engine controls are located on rear mast pole above the location of the cable pull-down system winch . Throttle and engine stop switch together located on the left side of the rear mast pole . A throttle cable and stop wire shuttles up to the left side of the engine.

Operation of the - SOLD OUT -- OUT OF STOCK -

PORTADRILLMINI®   U.S. PATENT # 6315059
The PORTADRILLMINI ®. allows for performance of a drilling operation to be performed by one individual to access confined areas inaccessible to larger conventional drilling rigs and may also further be disassembled if required , and reassembled by one individual. Additionally , the simplicity of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. allows an individual with only limited training and experience to master the operations and or repair the drilling unit in a short period of time.

The compact, portability of the PORTADRILLMINI ®. with operational features of a full size conventional drill rig allows for drilling maneuvers to be performed in typically impossible confined locations.

The PORTADRILLMINI ®. drilling unit is fabricated as such that all major, separable components have been designed to maintain a "bolt-on" status , full disassembly of the unit for transport is not necessary. The major sections consist of main base stabilizer rails platform- Drill mast - Engine - .Transmission-. Cable pull-down system -. Air/water/mud injection flow control valve system regulator unit.

When the desired drilling location is determined and reached , starting with the engine in the lowered position check all fluid levels . Install weights on each side of weight bar. Connect air supply hose to air flow control valve . Connect water supply to water flow control valve . Hoist engine to top mast position . Install drill steel with drill bit threaded and installed down through drill steel opening at main base water deflector shield thread drill steel coupling to drill steel and to steel swivel located below the gear reduction transmission drive box. The drilling assembly is now ready for drilling to begin. Switch the engine stop switch to the on position, and start engine.

Open throttle and open injection flow control valves accordingly . Grasp winch handle crank . Engage cable pull-down system winch to the neutral position and lower drill bit to the ground . Drill bit then cuts or loosens the earth .

The drilling fluid or air injection then lifts the bore hole/ well cuttings up to the ground surface through an annulus formed between the outside of the drill pipe and walls of the well .

As the water table is penetrated the air will lift or circulate cuttings , displacing the same amount of water than the amount injected . This displacement of air lifting cuttings and fluid circulates and develops the well. As the engine assembly has lowered to the drill table , drilling is temporarily stopped and the drill pipe is disconnected from the steel swivel . The engine is hoisted to allow clearance for the next section of drill steel to be threaded to the steel swivel . The breaking out and connecting of drill pipe sections is performed on the drill steel table with a combination of pipe wrenches and locking wrenches to secure drill pipe. A wrench is used on the drill steel coupling and or steel swivel to breakout or make-up drill pipe connections . Drilling operations can then continue after the next section of drill pipe is added or removed .

As porous subsurface formations are reached , the adjustment of air/water pressure or mud viscosity of drilling fluid is increased until stabilized or drill fluid circulation is acceptable and under control. The use of drilling fluid additives is recommended as needed in unconsolidated formations . As more denser rock formations are encountered or drilled air/water pressure can be adjusted or decreased to control the flow of circulation or flow of bore hole cuttings up to the ground surface. When the desired bore hole or water well depth is reached , the drilling mud is stabilized or air/water pressure increased and to insure the integrity of the bore hole or water well. This will enable the well to be fully developed and all cuttings removed through the circulation process. Once the final depth is achieved removal of drill steel begins . REMOVE ONE DRILL STEEL PIPE ONLY AT A TIME ! Removing multiple drill pipes will result in injury or accident. After drill steel is removed from bore hole or water well , well casing can then be installed if required . If the well or bore hole collapses , steel casing is installed in the pilot hole and driven to refusal . Rotary drilling then can restart and drilling continued inside the casing to remove the cave in material and drilled further down beyond the casing penetrating the rock until well integrity and water requirements satisfied

2. Drill Steel.

The drill steel connects the drill bit to the PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL and is a conduit for the method used for drilling fluid injection. First decide your drilling project depth requirements, then order enough drill steel to drill the entire depth of your well. Each drill steel section is 5 Ft. in length.

3. Drill Bits.

The drill bits are attached to the end of the string of drill steel and cut through various formations you encounter. The secret to the best optimal drilling with the PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL is to properly match the drill bit to the rock formation you are encountering. There are various types and designs of drill bits.  Tri-cone bits (also known as roller cone bits) have a tungsten carbide surface, which provides an extremely hard cutting edge. Drag bits cut extremely well but tend to wander (deviate) as they drill. Determine the diameter requirements of your drilling project and order the correct drill bits for your rock formation you will encounter.

 4. Well Casing.

The well casing is the outer pipe of your water well. Casings are required when the walls of the well tend to collapse or you are drilling in an unconsolidated formation. You begin to install the well casing after you started a pilot hole and have determined an unconsolidated formation has been encountered. The casing is lowered or hammered into the hole and keeps the hole open.  You will need the same amount of casing as drill steel. Make sure you can acquire enough steel casing locally for your drilling project.

5. Air Hammer (Optional)

Air operated hammers for driving steel casings, safe operation with air valve operational controls for the operator used on the ground from safe distance. Order this air-powered hammer for driving your steel casing needs.

6.Well Screen.

The well screen is a section of pipe perforated with thousands of small slots.  The screen attaches to the bottom of the well casing and filters out sand and sediment from your water. Using a well screen prolongs the life of your well. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES   -Filters out solids that can damage your pump, but is not serviceable.   Option - install a stainless steel screen in the tee on the surface well pipe. This screen can be removed and cleaned with out removing or disturbing the well suction pipe

7. MUD Pump.  (DRILLING FLUID CIRCULATION) OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

Used in mud injection drilling methods for drilling unconsolidated formations where the walls of the well tend to cave in or collapse. Drill mud flushes the cuttings out of the hole as you drill. Besides using far less water, the re-circulating pump allows you to use drilling mud to improve your well drilling conditions success. We have Gasoline as well as Diesel units available.

8. Drilling Fluid Additives. (drill fluid mud , drill foam, polymer gel agents)

These additives aid in removing cuttings from the well and help maintain the walls to keep sand and gravel layers from collapsing.  Drilling additives can only be used with a re-circulation system.

Question: Is it difficult to operate a PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL?

Answer: The drilling process is simple. Anyone in good, normal, active physical shape, who can operate any type of outdoor power equipment can drill with the PORTADRILLMINI ? DRILL.  One person can drill with the PORTADRILLMINI ® DRILL, but a crew of 2-3 helpers is better.

Question: Where should I drill?

Answer:  This is a very common question. Beware of underground UTILITIES!  Check for indications of buried pipes /water /sewer/ gas/ electric lines /telephone. Remember safety first!

You are looking to drill down into a naturally occurring water bearing strata. A water-saturated formation is normally of highly porous material, usually coarse sand and gravel, fractured rock; sometimes water filled voids may be encountered. This water usually enters the aquifer at a higher elevation from rainfall or snow melt that percolates downward through the earth and rock layers until it reaches the aquifer. As it moves through the aquifer at a slow rate of speed natural filtration occurs. These aquifers may have several layers of aquifers and voids that can extend hundreds or even thousands of miles. These aquifers occur at reasonable depths almost everywhere in the world. Contrary to popular belief, a aquifer is NOT a narrow "underground" river, where is it is necessary to drill at a very specific site. The best place to drill is  the most convenient safe  location for your drilling project . .

Question: How deep will I have to drill?

Answer: These aquifers usually are found at less than 300 feet. Your local water management authority, neighbors with existing wells, and local well drillers can tell you of the depth requirements in that local area. . It is common for the commercial driller to have drilled deeper than was really necessary because they are usually paid per foot. Also consider -the deeper you penetrate the earth -the more natural minerals you are likely to penetrate. Ex. - Sulfur, iron, lime, etc.  IF you find at a certain depth, the water is clean. And you have the gallons per minute requirement you need.   STOP.  Because it could very well get worse if you continue. Example - undesirable pockets penetrated, sand, natural staining minerals, or well collapse.

Question:  How will I know when I have hit water?

Answer: Most water-bearing formations or water tables known, as an aquifer is simply a formation of coarse sand and gravel. This type of rock formation is very porous and is saturated with water. One of the best ways to determine when you hit water is to check the cuttings being circulated out of the well while drilling. If drilling with air injection methods larger amounts of water will now be circulating to the surface once a water bearing table has been penetrated   When coarse sand and gravel is being flushed up, it is an excellent chance you are in good water or very close. Let this circulate and flow long enough to remove all the drill cuttings as the water is clearing up.   Another thing to watch for is a sudden decrease in the temperature of the water as it flows out of the well. Usually ground water is a constant 63-65 degrees and this ground water will mix with the drilling fluid and lower the temperature. The drilling fluid also could become much thinner and sometimes you will lose circulation when you hit water if not using the air injection drilling methods.

Question: Why should I buy the PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL instead of paying a driller to have the well drilled?

Answer: Good question! It is our experience that in many parts of the country, the cost of having just one well drilled costs more than the PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL.  Remember, the PORTADRILLMINI ®Drill will drill many wells and the purchase cost can be spread over several wells or over several years. Even if one well is drilled, you still have the PORTADRILLMINI® DRILL to sell or rent to your neighbors. It is not unusual to recoup 65-75% of the purchase price on the used market. You can very easily start a business niche by specialized confined location well drilling thereby profiting from your drilling experience in your local area.

How to Drill a water well with the PORTADRILLMINI ®DRILL

The average minimum depth of all domestic water wells is slightly less than 50 feet! Basically, a water well is a hole or shaft down to a water-bearing layer of sand or gravel, void  or a crack in the rock. Fortunately for the well driller, most of the clean fresh water beneath the surface of the ground occurs within 200 feet. Unless your area is very high elevation, famous for deep dry holes, the chances are that by a little investigative drilling you can find a useful water-bearing strata at a reasonable depth.

Where Will You Find Water?

Water saturated areas can be found around the immediate locations of streams, lakes, rivers , ponds , canals , sloughs and marshes . All underground water originates on the surface of the earth. The heat of the sun evaporates it; it forms clouds and falls as rain or snow; it accumulates in streams, ponds, oceans, etc.; it seeps into the ground.  There is 30 times as much water underground as there is in all the streams, lakes, ponds, canals and rivers in the world!

In the ground, water is found in 3 general types of formations:

1. Layers of sand

2. Layers of gravel

3. Porous rock, voids or cracks in rock (fractures)

There is no single "best" source. Some folks have the idea that the deeper you go the better the water, or only "good" water comes from rock, but this is not true. In fact, some rocks have natural minerals that dissolve in water; stain, leave undesirable deposits and these minerals give the water an odd taste and sometimes an odor. Minerals such as iron, sulfur, lime . as last resort they can be removed by a good water filtration system . As a general rule, the finest quality water comes from layers of sand, which filter the water naturally. You will frequently hit layers of sand and gravel before you hit solid rock. In other words, the deepest water is not necessarily the most and the best. BY STOPPING ... at a decent looking water level with good flow, visually pleasing clean water within meeting your acceptable gallons per minute requirement criteria, may be best . Going deeper ...may just ruin the well by undesirable deposits or minerals. Who knows.. You can't see what is below the ground.

In the old days a man dug his own well and took the work chore more or less for granted. Wells dug by a pick and shovel, and is hard work and more than a little dangerous. There is always the risk of cave-in or asphyxiation. Still, a lot of water wells around the world constructed with simple tools and manage to get enough water to sustain life.

Today the most modern well drilling method is the rotary air method. It is fast and efficient but until recently it was only available in big, heavy, truck-mounted conventional drill rig models. The rotary drill consists of a rock cutting drill bit attached to a length of hollow drill steel. The drill steel and bit are rotated and by injection methods drilling fluids are pumped through the drill steel. The bit cuts into the earth and the water washes the cuttings out of the drill hole to the top of the ground. Additional sections of drill steel are added as the bit goes deeper.

How To Know When You've Hit Water?

In a rotary air/mud/ water injection drilling system such as the PORTDRILLMINI® DRILL, a rotating bit cuts away material at the bottom of the well. By method of injection drilling fluids or air  is constantly pumped down the well to flush out the cuttings. This rotary system of drilling provides indications, which will let you know when you may have hit water.

The most important indication to watch for is the type of cuttings being flushed from the well as you drill. When you see coarse, pea rock, gravel-size pebbles coming up, you may be drilling into a water-bearing strata.

Another good indication can occur when you shut off your injection valve to change a drill steel: if the water in the well recedes quickly down the well, you may have reached a water-bearing strata. OR can indicate that the well walls collapsed on and round the drill steel causing a "bridge" in the well preventing the water to drain down into the well.

Because the ground water can be 20-30 degrees warmer or cooler than the drilling fluid and outside air there is a sudden change in the temperature of the drilling fluid when a water bearing strata is encountered.

When you have drilled down five feet, shut off the injection valve and add the next section of drill steel

From two years of research and development safety features are incorporated in the design of the PORTADRILLMINI ® DRILL, and operators are cautioned against modifying the components of the drill unit. As with any water well drilling equipment, normal safety protection and practices are required. Do not fuel a hot engine. Keep long hair and loose clothing away from the moving parts.

WARNING:  Take the required time to check for underground utilities . Do not drill near underground tanks or pipelines. Beware of overhead obstacles and electric lines.

The PORTADRILLMINI ® DRILL System   U.S. PATENT # 6315059

Is a complete man portable, compact one-person well drilling system! It can be maneuvered into locations where conventional truck-mounted drill rigs cannot go. For example, it can be used in confined locations, or to drill in backyards where large truck drills would tear up the landscape. It can be maneuvered into wooded areas or hilltops or by helicopter to remote locations where it would be considered impossible to drive a truck because the roads are not adequate enough to sustain a large truck drill rig or simply don't exist .

The PORTADRILLMINI ® DRILL system makes it ideal for people with no prior experience in well drilling. The portability advantages of the system makes it possible to have water wells where ever you need them, not just where you can afford to pay a drilling contractor to drill.

With one PORTADRILLMINI ® DRILL, you can drill many wells repetitively. If you are drilling near an existing water system, you can frequently use water from the garden hose to assist in injection methods.   Otherwise, you will need at minimum a 5 h.p. trash pump or mud pump and  access to 50 to 150 gallons of drilling water  to re-circulate the water.

Water Pressure

A & D Drilling Supply Corporation can supply you a pump that  is designed for the job. It will handle abrasive sandy water, and will allow the use of additives to prevent cave-ins when drilling in sand or gravel strata (more on that later). You will need 10 to 20 gallons per minute at 20 to 40 psi..

To use the well drilling pump, dig a small pit next to the drill hole and fill it with water. Use the pump to draw the water out of the pit and into the drill steel and bit. As the water flushes back up the hole, channel it into the pit to be re-circulated. This way, you drill your well using a minimal amount of water.  As a starter, have on hand about one gallon of water for each foot you expect to drill. A 30-gallon plastic bag in a trashcan makes a good container for hauling water to a drill site. Two or three 30-gallon bags should provide enough drilling water for most locations.

The circulation of water keeps the hole clean by washing the cuttings to the surface; this also allows you to examine the cuttings and identify the material from each level of drilling. These cuttings can tell you when you have found water.

Maintaining good water circulation while you drill is the most important factor in successful drilling. Failure to maintain good water circulation can cause bit failure and other problems. If at any time you lose circulation, stop drilling and pull up at least one drill steel section until circulation is restored before you continue to drill deeper. WARNING  CONTINUING TO DRILL DEEPER WITHOUT CIRCULATION MAY CAUSE THE DRILL BIT AND DRILL STEEL TO BECOME JAMMED AND STUCK !

Bits

Next to diamond, tungsten carbide is the hardest substance in the world. In industry, tungsten carbide is used to cut hard, tough materials such as glass and steel.

There are three basic bits to perform three basic functions:

DRAG BITS  : The Heavy Duty DRAG Bit is used in drilling earth, sand, clay, gravel and some softer rock formations. Unless you run into a layer of hard, solid rock, you should drill to the total depth of the well with your DRAG BIT  .

Tri-cone Bits (also known as roller cone bits): The Tri-cone drill bit is used in solid rock. The long toothed, tungsten carbide tipped bit is used in most sandstone, limestone, coral, granite and some lava rock formations that have favorable cutting characteristics.

TCI TRI-CONE BUTTON BITS: Tungsten carbide ,insert, button, bits, designed for harder rock formations such as granite.

Drilling Hints

Occasionally, you may encounter a stratum of sand that tends to cave in on the drill steel. Or you may drill into an extremely porous stratum that causes a loss of circulation. In this event, you will need to pre-mix a thickening additive with your re-circulation system or use foam injection methods.

There are two types of thickening agents. One is bentonite clay called "drillers mud." The other type of thickening agent is a gel that forms a viscous fluid the consistency of buttermilk. These products are most effective when mixed together in your injection drill fluids.

Removing The Drill Steel

As long as proper circulation was maintained for the full duration of the drilling process the drill bit and drill steel can easily be lifted from the hole. Each bit is designed to cut a hole that is larger than the bit itself. If the drill steel does not turn freely by hand then the well did not remain open and can possibly be jammed with well cuttings, or worse collapsed.

A word of caution when removing the drill steel: WARNING

ALWAYS WATCH OUT FOR OVERHEAD POWER LINES AND OTHER OVERHEAD OBSTACLES!

It is never advisable to remove more than 1 sections (5 feet) of drill stem at a time.

 WARNING

ALWAYS WATCH OUT FOR OVERHEAD POWER LINES AND OTHER OVERHEAD OBSTACLES!

It is never advisable to remove more than 1 sections (5 feet) of drill stem at a time.

 The Well Completion

After you have drilled down and found a promising formation. Now you "case" the well, which simply means inserting a casing (metal pipe) to keep the well from collapsing at some future time. At the bottom of your well, you will use a "well screen" or strainer to keep the sand and gravel out of your well.

To increase the full potential of volume of this well solid casing is joined to the well screen and continued all the way to the top. Some small pea gravel is poured on the outside of the pipe to within 20 feet of ground level. The pea gravel helps filter the sand out of the water before it enters the screen and casing. It also serves as a conduit or passageway for water from a stratum above the screened area to work its way down to the screen filtering through the gravel pack all the way.

If you drill through a water-bearing stratum along the way and don't notice it, you haven't cut off the supply from the stratum. This is why we recommend only one section of screen and a good gravel pack. The top 15'-20' of your well must be sealed around the outside of your casing to prevent ground water contamination.

Cleaning The Well

Before you install the permanent pump on the well, it is necessary to clean out any cuttings remaining inside the casing. Much of the material can be flushed out by test pumping the well with a gasoline water pump or by dropping a water hose to the bottom of the well and pumping clean water through it. Because this is a shallow depth pump, it may be necessary to add clean water to the well as you pump to maintain an artificial shallow pumping depth.

If you have an air compressor, the well can be circulated - flowed with air. This will not only clean out the well, but will give you a good idea of the water production of the well. The well needs to circulate and flow to remove the cuttings and or residuals of drilling additives.     This "circulation " is the term "developing a well," it gives the water vein a chance to open up and flow more freely.   Just about every new well will improve in both quality and quantity of water after a few hours (or even a few days in some cases) of pumping.

More Information

Much has been researched about water well drilling -find an underground vein or strata of water and dig or drill an opening to it. When you see fresh, clean cool water pouring out on the ground, you will realize that whatever effort of labor you made to get it was meaningful. Water is life! To control one of the elements of life makes the thrill of discovering water an experience hard to equal!

HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU KNOW THAT NEEDS A WELL

Most of the fresh ground water in the world occurs in the top 200 feet. Also, the average depth of all water tables in the U.S. is less than 100 feet! This abundant supply of pure, clean crystal clear water is yours, free for the taking! All you need to do is to drill a well to have all the water you'll ever need, practically free! A lifetime supply of free water, less than 200 feet away!

Quality Water:

Many city residents are drilling home water wells as an excellent alternative to chemical tasting municipal water. Your well water should be tested by a qualified laboratory or qualified individual before it is labeled "drinkable?. Industrial pollution and excessive use of chemicals required to purify the water to acceptable levels has almost made good tasting water a "thing of the past!" Your well water may test to be more drinkable than your city water!

Economical Water:

City water rates are rising. Heat temperatures are soaring.  Some residents have to pay for water and sewer, and they have septic tank. But if you drill your own well, you can pump all the water you need for only a few cents a day to water the grass.

Dependable Water:

You'll never again have to worry about your water supply going dry in the summer or a municipal city water system that has to ration water in times of drought - just think more water pressure when you want it. When you need it the most.

Abundant Water:

Remember--Water Is Life.  With your own well you're assured of plenty of water for household use, plus plenty left over for watering your lawn and garden. You may even want to add a fishpond or swimming pool to your property. Green grass, healthy trees. Beautiful landscaping.
